Ikaria in winter is quiet, mild and far more local than in summer: daytime temperatures are typically around 10–14°C, many tourist businesses close for the season, but the villages carry on as normal. If you are thinking of visiting between November and March, here is what to expect, from Agios Kirykos, where Kastro Hotel is.
At a glance
- Around 10–14°C from December to March, with occasional rain.
- Many seasonal businesses, especially near the beaches, close; the main towns (Agios Kirykos, Evdilos) work all year.
- Ferries and flights run year-round, but wind can cause delays or cancellations.
- Breakfast and the pool at Kastro run June to September only.
What is the weather like in Ikaria in winter?
Mild but not summery. Travel guides give roughly 10–14°C for the winter months, with some rainy days and misty mornings in the mountain villages. Pack a waterproof jacket, shoes with grip and a warm layer for the evening. Do not plan on swimming; plan on walking, long coffees and long dinners.
What is open and what closes?
As on most Aegean islands, beach businesses and some accommodation close after autumn and reopen in spring. What stays is everyday island life: kafeneia, bakeries, supermarkets, pharmacies and tavernas in the towns and villages. In Agios Kirykos all of that is a few minutes on foot from the hotel. We have no restaurant on site, so walking into town for a meal is part of the day.
What to do: hot springs, villages, museums
The thermal springs of Therma make the most sense in cold weather, and they are only 1.5 km from us (about 8 minutes by car). In Agios Kirykos the Archaeological Museum and the Folklore and History Museum are good for rainy days. November is olive-pressing and chestnut season, and hiking the island’s forest paths is easier without summer heat. Ikaria’s panigyria are not only a summer thing, but dates change, so ask locally. Our guide to the panigyria explains how they work.
Getting around in winter
Ferries and flights run all year at a lower frequency than in summer, and wind can delay or cancel sailings, so leave a buffer day if you have onward connections. See our guide on how to get to Ikaria. If you have a booking, we can arrange a transfer from the airport (11 km, about 18 minutes) or Evdilos port with a local taxi partner. For a car or scooter, see our rental partner.
Staying longer
From October to April we offer special rates on request for stays of 7+ and 30+ nights. Kastro is adults only, has views over the town and sea, and involves steps on the way up from town and inside the property, so please read Good to know before you book.
